EARLY READERS

Hi, welcome back

I am a huge fan of humour and comedy in writing. I love finding a book that can make you  laugh out loud. The more silly and outlandish the better.

Many young readers are the same. Toilet talk is all the rage. Walk into any  kindergarten or grade one classroom and say the word fart, you'll have the kids falling out of their chairs in laughter. The following authors below understand kid humour, and have captured the essence of childhood in each of their books.

Robert Munsch Canadian Author (June 1945-)

      Front Cover

Robert Munsch is one of the funniest writers for young children. He is a wonderful storyteller. My family and I had the pleasure of  seeing and hearing him live. He was so expressive and vibrant. The kids in the audience were mesmerized. The one sound that echoed throughout the auditorium was laughter.
Robert Munsch is the  author of 54 books many reaching the top of the charts. His  first book to reach #1 in both Canada and the United States was  Love You Forever.

I Have To Go!

I have to go is a humorous story all about timing. For those who live in a cold climates winters with young children can be a chore especially dressing them for the outdoors, donning snowsuits, hats, mitts and boots. The last words you want to hear from the back of the car is  "I Have To Go!"

Good Families Don't

Good Families Don't is a book about farts. Yes, I really mean farts. A hilarious story about good families who don't have farts.

What I especially like about Robert Munsch books is his wonderful way of taking the everyday occurrence and bringing it to light with humour.

Allen Morgan Canadian Author (Sept 1985-)

Allen Morgan was a kindergarten teacher for many years and now a writer, best known for his Matthew series.
The question remains, is Matthew dreaming all his adventures that take place in the middle of the night or are they real? Only you can figure that out. The Matthew series are so much fun, imaginative and original.  A wonderful early reader series for boys.

Below are three books of the many in the Matthew series.

Matthew and The Midnight Turkeys
Matthew and The Midnight Ball Game
Matthew and the Midnight Flood

Sheree Fitch Canadian Author (1956-)

Sheree Fitch is a multi published author with titles such as Mable Murple and Sleeping Dragons All Around. She won the Christie Award for best Canadian Children's Book for:  There Were Monkey in My Kitchen.

Willy Willoughby watches in disbelief as her house is filled by Orangatans, Baboons Gorilla's and Chimpanzees, all of whom don't want to leave.
A very funny book.

Dennis Lee Canadian Poet and Author (1939-)

A Canadian Poet who has a whimsical way with words. His tongue twisting limericks has been loved by children for generations. Dennis Lee is a multi award winning author, and received the prestigious Governor General's Award for poetry in 1972.

A sample from Dennis Lee's Poetry: Alligator Pie

Alligator pie, alligator pie,
If I don't get some I think I'm gonna die.
Give away the green grass, give away the sky,
But don't give away my alligator pie.

Alligator stew, alligator stew,
If I don't get some I don't know what I'll do.
Give away my furry hat, give away my shoe,
But don't give away my alligator stew.

Alligator soup, alligator soup,
If I don't get some I think I'm gonna droop.
Give away my hockey stick, give away my hoop,
But don't give away my alligator soup.

William Kotzwinkle American Author

I wanted to leave you with more book that will have kids laughing from the first page onward. The authors are William Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray.

Walter the Farting Dog

Walter has a problem one that doesn't bother him, but those around. He is continuously farting. Not loud obnoxious sounds, but quiet, secretly filling a room with noxious odours.

This series will have you doubling over with laughter, and one many pet owners will be nodding their heads with in agreement.  I can still recall my first dog Phoebe, a beautiful cocker spaniel clearing a room in seconds flat.

Happy Reading,
Bye Rosalyne
