Hi, welcome back
I hope you've had a great weekend. I spent much of my time writing, but managed to squeeze in some hours to read. I couldn't wait to read a YA novel that has received a great deal of buzz, and am happy to say it didn't disappoint.
The book is called Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. It is a beautifully written story, rich in prose, visuals and history. A fantasy story that has brought two worlds together, ours on Earth, and the mystical world beyond the portal door.
Laini Taylor
Laini Taylor is an author, artist, wife and mother of a two year
old daughter. She is a YA fantasy writer and a national book finalist
who has written the following titles: Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Lips Touch, and The Dreamdark series.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Daughter of smoke and Bone is a modern day fantasy Romeo and
Juliet. The story is drenched with lush visuals of modern day Prague, Morocco and Marrakesh. As beautiful as these places are their is also other world, one in which is hidden behind the portal doors, a world raging in battle and war.
Karou finds herself divided between both worlds. In Prague she lives the life of a seventeen year old girl, attends art school, and spends most of her time with her best friend Zuzana.
Her other life a secret, one she's called to with a moments notice. Passing through the portal door she enters another world, one where she's greeted by the man/beast, Brimstone. Some consider him to be the Devil, but to Karou a father and family. Her missions are always the same, sent out to unknown locales from Hong Kong to Marrakesh, to collect packages of teeth and return to Brimstone.
On her last visit to Marrakesh she meets a man, Akiva, the most beautiful man/angel she's ever seen. Karou can't shake the feeling that they've met before, his look, his smell even his touch all familiar.
Karou can't ignore the feeling that their's more to her life, a hidden identity, one Brimstone has kept from her, but why. As the story unfolds Karou begins to discover who she really is and what her future holds.
This is the first book in the trilogy. The second is due out in September of this year.
Happy reading,
bye Rosalyne
