LAURIE HALSE ANDERSON

Hi,
Some of you may be familiar with my next author I'd like to showcase,
Laurie Halse Anderson

She is best known for her teen novels, which are hard hitting and real. She doesn't graze over difficult social issues instead, attacks  them with compassion, sensitivity and pureness. Speak, her first novel is a perfect example.
 Speak:

Melinda, a high school freshman was enjoying the last of the summer parties when her life changed in an instant. She was subjected to an unthinkable act of violence. Terrified, she called the police and ended the party.

Returning to school she kept her secret hidden from all.  Rumours flew, she was known as the party breaker and ostracised. Those who were her friends, were no longer.

Melinda withdrew into herself, her world crumbled as she sunk deeper into depression. It took time for her to see that what happened at the party wasn't her fault. She was violated, raped, and a victim of violence. Once she recognized this her life began to slowly rebuild, light seeping through the cracks in the walls that had held her prisoner.

Speak is honest, painful and real. It delves deeply into the emotional psyche of Melinda. It will linger with you long after you've set the book aside. A timeless story for teens of all ages.

Twisted:

Tyler Miller had always felt inadequate, bullied for years by his iron fist father.  He found comfort blending into the woodwork. Returning to school in his senior year, he no longer could hide behind the skinny facade, now buff from working outdoors all summer. His new physique attracted attention.

His new found popularity spiraled out of control, accused of posting nude pictures of the most popular girl online. No matter how much he tried to convince others he hadn't no one listened.

His home life became unbearable, as did his life at school. Unable to take it any more, he reached for his dad's gun. The barrel was in his mouth, only a trigger away from death when he realized that suicide wasn't the answer. What mattered was to stand up to those who'd bullied him his entire life, most of all his father. This began his journey into manhood.

Winter Girls:

Wintergirls is as real and pure as you can get. Today's youth are fixated on skinniness, unrealistic images flogged by the media of what is considered to be beauty. Many feel it necessary to achieve the impossible regardless of  their health.

Lia was riddled with guilt and self loathing. She was on a downward path of self destruction, suffering from anorexia. Without help she'd end up like her ex best friend, dead, found alone in a hotel room.

When starvation wasn't enough, Lia turned to cutting. It was her way of releasing pain, anger, and  feelings of guilt and loss. It was only a temporary fix. It soon became evident to her that she needed help, and unless she got some soon would end up dead like her friend.

Other titles for teens:
Prom
Catalyst

Historical Thrillers:
Chains
Forge
Fever 1793

Laurie Halse Anderson writes with empathy and understanding. She is able to hone in on topics of importance, ones we all see and face growing up.  Her characters share with the reader an openness and honesty in the clarity of her writing.

Happy reading,
Bye Rosalyne
